Versatile materials by Evonik for creative furniture design
Evonik Industries presenting furniture design applications for PLEXIGLAS® and PARAPAN® at the ZOW
From kitchen cabinets to glass-paned cabinets, PLEXIGLAS® has several versatile uses in furniture design. Evonik Industries will be on hand to provide further information at this year's ZOW, an international supplier tradeshow for the furniture and interior design industry, held from February 18 to 21 in Bad Salzuflen, Germany. The Evonik exhibit (Hall 20, Stand B38) will showcase the company's PLEXIGLAS® and PARAPAN® product portfolios and demonstrate many practical application examples from the world of furniture design and furniture manufacturing.
As an example, PLEXIGLAS® Optical HC combines high-end looks with maximum durability. The material has a scratch-proof coating and stands out for its particular resistance to abrasion and chemicals. "Our customers like to use PLEXIGLAS® Optical HC in kitchen construction. They can use this high-gloss and scratch-proof material to finish elegant kitchen cabinet faces that are both sturdy and functional," explains Sibylle Hallstein, product manager at Evonik. "The material is frequently used for tradeshow and store design and in museums, too." The durable material has no problem resisting aggressive detergents or accidental scuffing by zippers.
High gloss with depth effect
PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss is another material that can be used to achieve special effects. This opaque, high-gloss acrylic glass stands out for its special illusion of depth, a feature that can be used for exciting design effects, for example, in bathroom cabinetry. Depending on what the user wants, the material has a polished piano surface effect on one or both sides.
The PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss grade with its inherent decor opens up a wide range of new design options for interior and exterior applications.
Shining down to the last detail, PARAPAN® is manufactured and delivered with polished edges according to the customer’s specification. The thoroughly tinted material has been setting high-gloss standards for furniture doors, drawers, and paneling for years. PARAPAN® is the perfect high-gloss material for creative furniture designs and innovative interior design concepts, for example, in flagship stores, banks, or offices.
Furthermore, PLEXIGLAS® and PARAPAN® offer many further characteristics that make them exciting materials for furniture design. PLEXIGLAS® has eleven times the impact strength of glass, but only weighs only half as much. A glass dropping on a table made of PLEXIGLAS® will not leave a dent, and glass cabinets made of the material retain their transparency for several years because the synthetic material will neither become brittle nor turn yellow. Evonik warrants the color retention of dyed products for ten years and the absence of yellowing in uncoated, non-dyed semifinished materials for thirty years. The original material is colorless and allows for dyeing in any color shade.
Cold bending, thermal reshaping
What is more, furniture manufacturers can process and install PLEXIGLAS® and PARAPAN® in many different ways. The material offers great potential for implementing creative ideas. For example, it is suitable for cold bending or permanent thermal reshaping in the uncoated varieties.
With ACRIFIX®, an adhesive specially developed for PLEXIGLAS® and PARAPAN®, it is possible to bond the materials seamlessly. PLEXIGLAS® is available in a wide range of shapes, including solid panels, blocks, tubes, and rods, PARAPAN®, in solid sheets.
The Evonik exhibit at ZOW (February 18 to 21, 2013, Bad Salzuflen) can be found in Hall 20, stand B38.
